Aurora Awards
Dr. Carmina Quiroga DPM and Dr. Kiera Benge-Shea DPM PGY3 were honored with winning an Aurora Award earlier this month. Their case submission on “Healing a Chronic Diabetic Wound After Infection Derived Amputation” was chosen as one of four grand prize winners for the Kerecis Northern Lights Workshop, which holds the annual Aurora Awards: highlighting successes in fish skin grafting as a tool to heal difficult wound cases. This year had a record number of submissions from around the world and both doctors have the distinguished honor as winners to have the opportunity to share their case study at the Northern Lights Wound Workshop taking place in Reykjavik, Iceland this February. The Aurora Awards provides four grand prize winners with a grant for the conference and the opportunity to present on the main stage, while an additional 30 cases were selected to have their case submissions highlighted as poster submissions. This success on a global level brings not only pride to the SSM DePaul Podiatry Residency, but also an appreciation for the caliber of the program to have the ability to be competitive at this level. Dr. Quiroga and Dr. Benge-Shea are thrilled to have been chosen and look forward to bringing this honor to Saint Louis.

Congratulations to Dr. Carmina Quiroga, DPM and Dr. Shirley C. Visser, DPM on completing their board certification with The American Board of Wound Management. The American Board of Wound Management is a multidisciplinary board that governs and sets the standard in wound care. Drs. Quiroga and Visser traveled to San Antonio, Texas this past weekend to attend a conference on wound management and to take their examination for board certification. We were notified officially on Monday afternoon that both have passed. Both of these doctors are now double board certified with the American Board of Wound Management and the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. We are extremely proud of this most recent accomplishment by our doctors.
