Dr. H. John Visser

Dr. H. John Visser is one of the podiatric profession's most accomplished and respected physicians. He graduated magna cum laude from Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio, in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry. He then earned his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from the Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1978, graduating as Valedictorian of his class and receiving Pi Delta honors for outstanding academic achievement.

Following podiatric medical school, Dr. Visser completed a rigorous three-year residency in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at Lindell Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, from 1978 to 1981. At the time, he was one of only two podiatric surgeons to complete this advanced training program.

Dr. Visser is board certified by both the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery and the American Board of Podiatric Medicine, making him one of a select group of podiatrists to hold dual board certifications. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Visser has held numerous leadership positions within the profession. He served as President of the St. Louis Podiatric Medical Society from 1983 to 1984 and as President of the Missouri Podiatric Medical Association from 1985 to 1988. He has also served as an examiner for the American Board of Podiatric Surgery.

Dr. Visser's commitment to advancing podiatric medicine extends to public service. He served on the Missouri State Board of Podiatric Medicine after appointments by three Missouri governors: Governor John Ashcroft (1988–1993), Governor Matt Blunt (2005–2009 and 2009–2014), and Governor Jay Nixon (2014–2021).

A dedicated educator and mentor, Dr. Visser served as Director of Residency Training in Foot and Ankle Surgery at Mineral Area Regional Medical Center from 1985 until the hospital's closure in 2015. In 2012, he was also appointed Director of Residency Training in Foot and Ankle Surgery at SSM DePaul Health Center in Bridgeton, Missouri, leading both programs simultaneously until 2015 before continuing as the sole director at SSM DePaul. The residency program is a PMSR/RRA program accredited by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education. Over the course of his career, Dr. Visser has trained more than 100 podiatric surgeons and continues to shape the next generation of foot and ankle specialists through his leadership and dedication to medical education.
